The Patriot

The Patriot (2000) - Rotten Tomatoes

Happy June 27th everyone! You're probably thinking "Why is June 27th an important date? Is there some new holiday I missed?" Well, besides being National Bingo Day, today is the 20th anniversary of one of my favorite films... The Patriot

The Patriot, directed by Roland Emmerich, is a historical fiction film that takes you back to the American Revolution. Follow Benjamin and Gabriel Martin (Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger) as they take on the task of starting up their own militia and attempting to take down Col. William Tavington's (Jason Isaacs) army. From intense battle scenes to lovely family moments, this movie hits on every aspect of a young family during the American Revolution.

What makes this film special is that you'll see the revolution from the point of view of a family, not a fancy war hero. The Patriot shows the arguments a family would have on their views about the revolution and the faults this puts on their household. One of my favorite parts of this film is the scenes with the younger kids (the Martin family initially has seven kids). I love seeing the revolution from their point of view, there aren't many movies out there that show what young kids went through during that time. From being overly confident about themselves to being afraid of a little blood, each of the young siblings has their own traits that show off the varying children during the 1770s.

The music in this film is one of the best! I always say that music can make or break a film, and The Patriot is most definitely made better because of the music! If you know anything about music composers for films, you will not be surprised when I tell you who composed the wonderful music for The Patriot... John Williams! John Williams is a well-renowned music composer and has worked on several films. They're mostly small films, so you might now recognize any of these titles, but he's worked on Schindler's List, Jurrasic Park, all of the Star Wars movies, oh and a little movie series called Harry Potter. All joking aside, John Williams has done it all! If there's one reason to see The Patriot (there's not), this has got to be it!

typical thing for the family to do, stand on the front porch and ...

And the cast of this film is incredible! Mel Gibson plays the vigorous man of the family, Benjamin Martin, and leads this cast to make an amazing movie. Heath Ledger is the stunning, ambitious son, Gabriel Martin. Jason Isaacs plays the serious antagonist, Tavington. And of course, all the other militiamen, and family members of those men, round out this cast to make the film nearly perfect! Plus, you may spot a young Logan Lerman in the Martin family!

The Patriot has tons of amazing things about it (intense scenes, awesome music, and an incredible cast) and I think everyone should watch this film! It shows the American Revolution in a new and unique way, and I think it would benefit everyone if people would start watching this movie again! Although this film is fiction, some parts are loosely based and twisted from real events!

Please, do yourself a favor and check out The Patriot! If you've seen this incredible film and would like to comment below your thoughts on it, I would love to hear them!
